12 Reasons You Should be Using Ghee (+Infographic)

Every nation has its secret beauty ingredient. While its green tea in China and the Far East, it is argan oil in Morocco, olive oil in the Mediterranean, turmeric, and ghee in India, and many more. I did not know about ghee as a beauty ingredient until I received MIRATI night cream, which was a pleasant experience for me, you can read my full review here.

That made me curious about learning what exactly is ghee, so I browsed through the Internet and found some interesting facts that I would love to share with you 🙂

So What is Ghee?

According to Wikipedia “Ghee is a class of clarified butter that originated in India and is commonly used in Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Nepali and Sri Lankan cuisine, traditional medicine, and religious rituals.”

Clarified butter means that ghee is derived from butter. While ghee has similar properties to that of butter, it is not the same as butter.

Ghee is made by cooking butter until all moisture is removed and all milk solids are caramelized. Butter is heated slowly on the stove to remove all the impurities and milk solids. The result is golden purified butter.

And to my surprise, I found that ghee is much healthier than butter, for many reasons…

Health Benefits of Ghee

  1. Butter may increase unhealthy cholesterol levels while ghee lowers the unhealthy cholesterol levels. That helps prevent heart diseases. [Source]
  2. Rich in vitamins A, D, K2, E, and anti-oxidants.
  3. Full of fatty acids that are absorbed directly and burnt to produce energy. And if you consume ghee in small portions that will help you lose weight.
  4. Ghee has a high smoke point(250 °C  482 °F), you can easily cook with it without losing its benefits or producing highly dangerous compounds (harmful free radicals).
  5. Ghee is also a good substitute for those who are lactose or casein intolerant.
  6. In India and the Far East, it is used for detoxifying the body.

Ghee Benefits to Your Skin and Hair

7. It makes your skin glow; ghee locks moisture in your skin, and thus it protects your skin from getting dry.

8. Cures chapped lips by providing your lips with the fatty acids needed to lock in moisture, thus preventing your lips from dryness.

9. Moisturizes your skin, whether it is your face, arms or legs, you can apply ghee and massage gently, leave it on for around half an hour then take your shower. Ghee will leave your skin soft and supple.

10. Reduces dark circles when applied daily before going to bed.

11. Hair treatment for coarse dry hair including split ends. You need to warm ghee and apply it to the end of your hair, wait for an hour before shampooing your hair.

12. If you have dry skin during winter, ghee could be one good solution for your skin, just like coconut oil and shea butter, the good fatty acids can cure your dry skin.

Mix ghee and milk ( of equal portions), add besan till you get a creamy consistency, then apply to your face, let it dry for 20 minutes then wash off your face with cold water.

Ghee can make your skin incredibly soft just like shea butter and coconut oil. What makes ghee stands out from other natural beauty ingredients is that you can cook with ghee, rub your hands with the leftovers, apply some to your hair, and massage your face with it. And when you finish cooking, take a shower, and enjoy the feel of soft skin, and healthy shiny hair! No wonder when I used MIRATI night cream, I always woke up with very soft skin in the morning!
